In November 1999, UNESCO launched an international appeal for the promotion of arts education and creativity in schools. This appeal was launched in the spirit of the 1996 international report known as the “Delors Report” entitled Learning: the treasure within. This report underlined the urgent need to reform and reinforce school systems, paying special attention to creativity and arts education. More specifically this report describes four pillars of education:

  • Learning to know, that is acquiring the instruments of understanding
  • Learning to do, so as to be able to act creatively on one’s environment
  • Learning to live together, so as to participate and co-operate with other people in all human activities, and
  • Learning to be, is about individual development and the shaping of personality, which starts with knowing oneself and opens out to relationships with others.

Learning to be may include learning to see through visual and other art forms, a focus of this conference. Indeed, learning to be may imply that art should be given more importance in schools than is commonly the case in many countries. In learning to live together, we can ask what is the role of art educators, artists and researchers in forming sustainable, creative and democratic learning environments? This conference will attempt to address this issue by focusing on art education in a wider societal perspective, both as a value in itself, and as part of a broader educational mission in a rapidly changing and increasingly pluralistic world.

The conference seeks to deepen our understanding of issues related to art and dignity and issues related to aesthetic experiences and the development of personhood, self-cultivation and sustainable living. The conference will form an arena for exchanging critical reflections and investigations of the power of artistic experiences as starting points for individual and social processes that are vital to inclusion and education for democracy.

Taking primary school as its starting point, the conference will address various contexts where pupils are introduced to art. We will look into art experiences enabled by visiting artists, through the participation of young people in professional artistic projects and through the development of children’s creative powers during regular arts classes.

The conference will be directed towards exploring these issues in various contexts. The Norwegian model of providing regular visits by artists in schools, The Cultural Schoolbag, will be given particular attention. Furthermore, special attention will be given to exploring student’s perspectives – students as receivers, co-creators or perhaps as critics of art and artistic experiences. The conference will address issues concerning artistic content and quality in view of young people’s negotiation of aesthetic capital.

We hereby request proposals that discuss one or more of the following topics:

  • Art in schools: creativity and education
  • Children as audiences and as co-creators of art
  • Youth, identity and aesthetic capital
  • Art, emotions and human dignity
  • Art and children’s rights
  • Art, contemplation and attention in a digital age
  • The humanities and the development of democracy
  • Intercultural experiences and the promotion of cultural diversity
  • Art and the extraordinary body – facilitations for the inclusion of all pupils
  • Disability art
  • The Cultural Schoolbag
  • Artistic research on children and young people’s art experiences
